Tooth Replacement Procedures: The Facts

Have cracked or missing teeth? Got teeth with large fillings? Not sure what to do to help? You may be eligible to receive some tooth restoration. Tooth replacement procedures can be a helpful solution for those with damaged or missing teeth. If left untreated, these problems can grow into more severe dental or health issues. Missing teeth can also cause the remaining teeth to shift, leading to a loss of facial structure and can lead to a saggy, older appearance, or even a loss of mouth function.

Dental Implants

If you’re missing one or more teeth, then dental implants are the best solution for you. A dental implant is a screw-like anchor that is attached where your missing tooth is. It is placed in your jaw and screwed in to prevent any debris from entering. It remains there for 3-6 months until the gum has fully secured over the implant. The implant is then removed in another procedure where an extension is attached for the gum to heal around it. This will act as the foundation for your new tooth. Your dentist then makes a ceramic crown that suits your teeth, and places it on top of your implant. In the end, it will look and feel like a real tooth!

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges help seal the gap between missing teeth. There are three types of dental bridges: traditional bridges, cantilever bridges, and resin-bonded bridges. Traditional bridges are the most common, and they’re made with either porcelain infused with metal, or ceramic.

The procedure of installing a dental bridge involves several visits. Adjacent teeth are grinded down to allow the bridge to be placed. Impressions will be made from your teeth and sent to a dental lab so a bridge can be made up. During this, you will be fitted with a temporary bridge to wear until it’s done. Once your bridge has been made, your dentist will contact you so they can remove your temporary bridge and fit your new one. If it’s a fixed bridge, it may be placed temporarily to ensure it fits properly, after which it is fully cemented.

Removable Partial Denture

A removable partial denture is a temporary solution to a missing tooth. This is suitable for those who aren’t suitable for a dental bridge due to too many missing teeth. While they are reasonably comfortable, they may take a while getting used to. RPDs come in three types: the flipper, flexible partial dentures, or partial dentures with precision attachments.

Like dental bridges, it will take several appointments for you to be fitted with a RPD. Your dentist will determine which one is right for you and make an impression of your jaws. The impressions will be sent to a dental lab to be made up. Once it’s done, your dentist will help fit your RPD and ease you into wearing it. It may take several weeks for your cheeks and tongue to get used to wearing it, as well as removing and inserting it. Feel free to contact your dentist with any issues that may arise while wearing your RPD.
